In a landmark ruling delivered today, January 31, 2025, the Supreme Court of Uganda upheld the unconstitutionality of trying civilians in military courts. Justice Monica Mugenyi emphasized that the General Court Martial (GCM) does not meet the constitutional requirements of an independent and impartial court as mandated by Article 28(1) of the Constitution. She stated, "The General Court Martial is not an independent and impartial court and is inconsistent with the Constitution."  This decision stems from the case involving former Nakawa MP Michael Kabaziguruka, who had been charged with offenses related to national security and was set to be tried by the military court. Frontiers Post  Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, has confirmed a tragic incident involving a fuel tanker that overturned and burst into flames along the Kampala-Bombo highway in Kigowa, Kasangati, Wakiso District. The accident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, Uganda has seen an increase in road-related incidents involving fuel tankers. According to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), there has been a 12% rise in tanker accidents in the past two years, attributed to poor road conditions and reckless driving. THE FRONTIERS POST  Opposition leader Hon. Joel Senyonyi, in a televised interview, alleged that police fired a tear gas canister at Hon. Kyagulanyi Sentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, from close range, causing a severe leg injury and shrapnel wounds across his body. The incident occurred during a thanksgiving event hosted by Mr. George Musisi in Bulindo, Wakiso District. As Bobi Wine passed through Bulindo town, large crowds gathered, prompting the police to disperse them. Senyonyi criticized the police for releasing a statement that he claimed misrepresented the event. He further reported that although Bobi Wine is no longer in immediate danger, he remains in significant pain and has been admitted to the hospital.
