There's the mask of the benevolent leader, all smiles and promises, bestowed upon the weary electorate like a gleaming talisman. Beneath it, of course, lies the face of self-interest, wrinkled by years of backroom deals and whispered secrets. Next, we have the mask of the devout patriot, wrapped tightly in the national flag, exuding an aura of unwavering loyalty. This mask is especially popular around election time, when every speech is peppered with fervent declarations of love for the motherland. Yet, peel back this patriotic carrot, and one finds a well-practiced cynicism, ready to trade principles for power at the drop of a ballot.
