EMPOWERING SELF-RELIANCE: Breaking the Cycle of Dependency in the Elgon Region

Basing on the recent observations about our leaders in the Elgon metropolitan area, where everyone seems to want to meet the president, and most likely for self centred reasons only strengthens the dependency syndrome that has for decades reduced our heritage to ruins.

Yet breaking away from a culture of dependency will be challenging when our leadership continues to perpetuate it. Despite the Elgon region's wealth in agricultural potential and mineral resources, we have reduced our people to modern-day beggars.

Instead of promoting a strong work ethic, we focus on trivial matters and personal egos. This harmful trend must be addressed and reversed immediately.

This dependency culture took root when government began household  programs like  distributing pangas, axes, blankets, and hoes. This promoted peasantry, but good enough, the focus shifted to subsidized ADB and World Bank loan partnerships. And now, the emphasis is on national infrastructure development, such as quality rails, roads, and local foreign direct investment in raw material processing for value addition.

As leaders, we need to empower people to help themselves and instill pride in their own achievements. Emyoga and PDM are intended for that cause. But government's rationing , monitoring and evaluation is failing the process.

We need to encourage modern agricultural practices and discourage the sale of land in favor of cultivation to foster self-reliance and sustainable growth. We need to emulate our fore fathers who gave birth to Bugisu cooperative society and the likes of Hon Nandala who have sourced for international markets for our coffee.

Until  the leadership in Masaba land embraces this regional perspective of their land and thier people, only then shall we sease from hawking the dependency syndrome in the region
